I don't recall Quetzal well, but his attempt to stick to beef tea might well have been in order to avoid doing things that might get him caught, rather than out of compassion for humans. After all, he does direct the colonists to Green at the end. And I'm not sure that Jahlee and Krait "struggle against their nature." They both refrain from drinking the blood of Horn or those in his party (at least Jahlee does; I don't remember Krait too well, again), but I don't recall any indications that they made any effort not to drink the blood of humans in general. It seems to me that this is at best delayed gratification, not a struggle against one's nature. --Adam --
