FWIW, this has similarity to a bit in URTH, wherein Severian is attacked in the dark on the ship Tzadkiel. As no doubt everyone here recalls, "Idas" the albino (actually an undine juvenile) is the first assassin Severian discovers, but Gunnie-the-love-interest was another one, and Purn was the third (the one bitten). Point: Gunnie was the one who was burned when Severian fired his laser pistol against the assassins, and the burn covered her chest and abdomen. =mantis= --
