Newt Gingrich co-authored _1945_ with professional SF writer William 
Forstchen. It was published late in 1995, but portions including a sex 
scene deleted from the final text were released during the 1994 election 
season.  The convention appearance in Atlanta was most likely Dragon*Con 
94 or 95.
