Mr. Tilly seems to have killed his dogs, wife, and son with side effects of the "medicines" he was testing on them. If he was trying out his new "hunchback medicine" on his assistant before he died, this could account for Smart's shoulders. It seems like this should have taken more than five days, but I've argued before that part of Smart's story of Mr. Tilly may be a lie (note that Smart is described as having a long nose) and that Mr. Tilly was really poisoned by Smart. -- Stone Ox --
