I forgot: the mirrors are one way to filter out all the frequencies
except the one you're interested in, since only the components whose
wave-lengths subdivide the space between the mirrors exactly add
together, rather than reducing each other. Lasers and the like are
built on this idea, and provide light with a very narrow frequency
set--although, unfortunately, below light-speeds.
