Rostrum,

Oops, I mixed two famished Severian moments.  The hunger beyond the
lake happens between books III and IV, ending when Severian finds the
dead man who will become Miles (IV, ch. 1).

"Hungry enough to eat a haunch of horse" comes later (ch. 19) and
ends when Sev joins the military unit.
